In weekly exercises students explore point, line, shape, plane, texture, pattern, tone, hierarchy, contrast and composition. Visual presentations, group discussion and critique will analyze the use of these elements and principles in visual communication, contextualized in social, historical and contemporary frameworks.

Weekly outline

Welcome to this demonstration version of FNDT 109 Visual Communciation Online. This course was developed by Heidi May and has been offered most terms since the Fall of 2005.

This version, the first two weeks of the course, is presented here without student content in the Forums (where asynchronous discussions take place), the Chats (for synchronous meetings) or student assignments. For more information about enrolling return to the main page. Go...

A brief summary of the course:
This online course follows the same curriculum that occurs in the face-to-face sections of this Foundation course at the Emily Carr Institute. Of course the delivery of the content is much different, but the information discussed and the projects assigned will be based on the same principles. At times this online environment may challenge how we work together but, I also think it will allow us to embrace non-conventional techniques of both learning and art-making. I'm excited to get started and I look forward to meeting each of you and sharing ideas and artwork.

Basic Elements: The Power of Line
This week's content examines the communicative aspects of lines within several areas of art and design. The book's content explores how line is used as a means of basic communication, a symbol of observation, an expression of emotion, a tool within conceptual art, and an element of motion. Students will spend time critiquing the "function" of art and design examples (Assignment #2 from Week 1)
