Topic outline

Hello and welcome to the BEST PRACTICES  online learning course website. Please be patient; this site is still under construction.

Whether you are just starting to develop an online course or wanting to add an online component to your face-to-face course or looking for new uses of familiar resources and activities, you will want to have a look at what is presented here. Rather than a 'how to' this site shows  you what aspects of a course might look like and how other faculty have used them effectively in their courses.

If you are new to this environment, you will also want to refer to the Faculty Guide to Online Learning > It contains lots of useful information about the Moodle Course Management System we use here.

The first topics show examples resources and activities that have been used in actual courses. They includes images, videos, sound files, links to external websites, screen shots from live courses, etc.

If you have a best practice that works for you and your students in your online course, please post a link to it the Best Practices forum >

The second group of topics include student projects, forums, discussions and chats, etc.

POLLING STUDENTS

Standardized surveys can be used to poll students on the courses. See surveys in Activities draw down menu.

Want to find out what the students in your class think try constructing a Choice activity; they  can be used to make informal class polls. A recent activity module that works very well and provide lots of options is the Feedback module, a non graded quiz, with lots of question style options.

Random Glossary Entry

creativity

the ability or power to create. Productivity with originality and expressive qualities; imagination; newness. This typically requires getting comfortable with not knowing what you're doing.

Among other activities, both remembering and forgetting are crucial to the creative process, as are also acts of destruction.

Brainstorming is a process for stimulating the generation of ideas.

The most prominent inhibitors of creativity are commonly known as "blocks to creativity."
