Week 2 - January 20th

Presentation: Anthologies, Illustration Annuals, and Art Books w/ Amory
Breakout Rooms to talk about the presentation's questions:
If you could form a group of friends to make an anthology, what would you want it to be about? A particular theme? A social topic or movement? A specific format (like comics)?
Who in this class do you know that would want to take part in your anthology? Write down their names here.
What kind of platform do you think you would need to make it a reality? A book? A website? A Meet-Up group?
What kind of funding do you think you would need to make it possible? Printing fees? Mailers? Website fees?
Who could help you with that funding? Parents? Grants? Loans? Crowd-funding?
What professional organizations or companies should you tell about it? A publisher? A Non-Profit? Try to find the names of real companies that would want to know about your project.

Born and raised on the Canadian prairies, Aaron Leighton attended the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary, graduating with distinction in 1995. Since then, his work has appeared in books, magazines, advertising, animation and apps, and has been recognized by both American Illustration and Applied Arts. DEADLINE FOR UPLOADS: Study Week – Thursday, February 24th.

Image file specifications:
2-4 artworks to supplement: any size (be aware that we may not include all of these images if there are layout constraints).

Resolution for all works: 300dpi or higher

Colour Profile for all works: CMYK (Photoshop Working CMYK profile)

File format for all works: TIFF

File naming mnemonic for all works: FirstName_LastName_TitleOfWork.tif

Example: Bob_Ross_HappyLittleTrees.tif

Other file to include:

One PDF with:

your full name as you would like it printed (this can be in your native language - such as chinese/korean/japanese characters or arabic, etc).

image list of all uploaded works with title, medium, and year. For clarity sake, please also make a note which piece is your Anthology Project piece if you have other works at the same dimension.

Holman Wang is a lawyer who also finds time to make children’s books. He and his brother, Jack, are the twin powers behind the board book series Cozy Classics and Star Wars Epic Yarns, which abridge literary and cinematic classics into just twelve words and twelve needle-felted images. Their unique artwork has been exhibited around the world, including at The Original Art exhibition in New York, the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, and the National Museum of Play. Guest Visitor: Melanie Cervantes
Melanie Cervantes (Xicana) lives in the San Francisco Bay Area and creates visual art that is inspired by the people around her and her communities’ desire for radical change and social transformation. In 2007 she co-founded Dignidad Rebelde, a graphic arts collaboration that produces screen prints, political posters and multimedia projects that are grounded in Third World and indigenous movements that build people's power to transform the conditions of fragmentation, displacement and loss of culture that result from histories of colonialism, genocide, and exploitation. Dignidad Rebelde’s purpose is to translate the stories of struggle and resistance into artwork that can be put back into the hands of the communities who inspire it. Guest Visitor: Edward Kinsella III
Kinsella graduated with honours from Ringling School of Art and Design in 2006, and his work has since been commissioned by Time Magazine, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, The Criterion Collection, Reader’s Digest, The Wall Street Journal, and MANY more. He has shown his fine art and illustration in a number of gallery exhibitions, and holds six medals from The Society of Illustrators, three medals from Spectrum, and a gold cube award from the art directors club.
