(DATABASE) Project One deliverables for in-class review

Mai Nguyen 

Mai Nguyen is an illustrator based in Vancouver, BC who is focusing on visual development and concept art. She is inspired by her interests in the natural and fantastical, and draws from her favourite pastimes such as tabletop games and video games. With tabletop games being a hobby, she is an avid fan of trading card games and board games, which made her became a big collector of these things. In her practice, she aims to create narratives through environmental pieces and character design about the connection of people, animals and our natural surroundings.

Maggie Lin

Maggie Lin is a Taiwanese illustrator based in Vancouver, BC. She often draws inspiration from ordinary life and distorts it with nonsensical imagery. The concepts of surrealism and familiarity intrigue her very much. A big part of Maggie’s childhood memories was watching animated films and manga. Thus, they have become a significant influence on her art. She works in traditional mediums such as watercolour and gouache but now mainly focuses on digital art. Besides creating art, she enjoys napping with her cat and playing video games.

Shengqiao Huang

Shengqiao Huang is a Chinese illustrator. Living frequently between China and Canada has made her more sensitive and inclusive to the things around her. Through her work she tries to invite a wider audience to pay attention to their own emotions, the problems of the natural environment and the protection of animals. Her work is mostly digital art, but still retains brush strokes that mimic the traditional medium of drawing. She is recently trying to expand her creative field by incorporating her identity as a designer into her work as well. Currently her illustration style and design style are completely different. Combining the two is the direction she wants to take.

Tat Peterson

Tatiana Isabella’s primary goal in life is to find more hours in her day to hold her sleeping cat. Unfortunately, time travel has yet to be invented (as far as she’s aware) so instead, she spends most of her day in front of her computer writing fantastical stories, melodramatic music, and illustrating exceedingly outlandish characters. Tatiana plans to slowly share all her strange creations with the world, but for now, she finds herself quite content sharing them with the small fuzzy cat companion she can’t put down. 

Sandford Hu

Sandford Hu is a sociable and passionate artist who travels frequently between Alberta and British Columbia. Equal parts writer as he is an artist, Sandford strives for excellence in both crafts, often combining the two in projects such as comics, video games, and illustrated short stories. Character design, concept art, and the human figure are his specialties in illustration, whether it be traditional or digital media. In writing, he prefers complex narratives and characters, executed through often simple concepts and premises. His greatest inspirations come from reality, and this is echoed in his practice, from the fashion of his characters to his worldbuilding. Sandford hopes to reach the hearts of others through both his art and his stories.

Yingyue Ma

Yingyue Ma is an illustrator from China, currently living in Vancouver. She is passionate about exploring different materials and techniques to create works related to the concept of dreams, animals, and nature. She keeps innovating and enhancing her personal style.Most of her artworks are colorful and childlike, and sometimes she creates abstract art. Since her Chinese zodiac sign is the rabbit, many of her works contain elements of the rabbit as well as being a representation of her identity. Besides creating art, she enjoys wearing lolita dresses, growing plants and eating snacks.

Roxi Dimarucot

Roxi is a visual artist/illustrator, Filipino Canadian based in Vancouver, BC. She was first guided into the art world by a few rugrats she had been instructing at a local children’s art studio. Their work, joy and their love of creating inspired her to challenge herself and take on art school at ECUAD. Her work celebrates trying new things, ordinary moments, and having fun. She is a proud dog mom who loves to sneak her 60lb pup anywhere she can. You can also find her dancing, acting, gaming, and eventually picture-book making.

Jenny Luo

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Jun Luo was instilled with an innate appreciation for the natural world due to her parents’ affinity for nature. She has fond memories of wading along shorelines, overturning every rock she could find and being enraptured by the sea birds flitting about. Over time, the natural world became the forefront of her work. Her fascination also extends to old world artifacts, folklore, uncanny and subliminal horror, all of which are intrinsic to the foundation of her illustration practice; often in tandem with her anxieties as a diasporic Chinese estranged from her culture. When she’s not hunched over her desk, Jun can usually be found playing bartender, gardening, crying over Avril Lavigne’s comeback, growing her collection of tacky Hawaiian shirts, or some combination of the four.

Irmak Citil

Irmak Citil is an artist who grew up in Istanbul Turkey. He is a fantasy illustrator and concept artist based in Vancouver, Canada. His practice consists of digital painting and drawings in a multitude of styles that all have fantastical elements. Irmak’s fantasy paintings concern themselves with narratives of power structures, ideological extremism and climate change. He is an avid follower of day-to-day politics and wishes to create a space of escape as well as a space of reflection from the systems we live under with his work.

James Vo

James Vo is an illustrator and printmaker from Calgary, Alberta, who currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia. His art is heavily influenced by manga, comics, games, pop-culture, surrealism, and fashion. James primarily works digitally and enjoys the process of transferring his art from the digital realm to something physical through silkscreen printmaking. He is an aspiring comic cover artist and character designer, who loves to create covers and characters for the comics he enjoys to read. His other passions include cycling and snowboarding. Whenever he is not creating art he will most likely be enjoying the outdoors, if the Vancouver weather allows it.
