I am going for a Broadway style poster so I included some of the examples and notes that I observed in those posters, hoping to incorporate them into my posters as well. I am leaning towards the long shot, the portrait and the “vintage” although I am a bit nervous that I’ve added too much complexity for a musical poster so I’ll be experimenting with styles for each of them.

My story is about a childhood friend I had from elementary to middle school. When we were kids we shared a lot of similar hobbies, but due to different expectations from parents after elementary, we slowly started to drift apart. She liked anime and video games and wanted to go to art school after graduation but didn’t get the chance due to being forced into studying engineering. I want my play/musical to be about teen angst and exploring self identity, giving it a playful yet bittersweet feel.

The character of my zine is a friend who appears constantly in my dreams, while I do not know her in real life. Due to the nature of her being a skeleton (sometimes appears in human form or a mixed state), I am thinking of a Disney live-action movie with Tim Burton's aesthetics. However, as my real dreams might be too dreadful (such as when I found my friend's shredded corpse under the sink), I would like to tone the story down to emulate a Tim Burton production.

Movie poster concepts. The story's based on a childhood friend who left a very strong impression on me growing up. We had a bit of a complicated relationship from the beginning - so while doing the exercises,
I found that a lot of those memories were somewhat bittersweet. I thought it would be appropriate to try and portray those complications with more surreal imagery in the initial concepts.

Cat Pen Plane: the tale of my best friend who one normal day, without warning, moved back to china and I never saw her in person again, not even to say goodbye (we video called all night to say farewell and that was that). Actress I’m using as reference: Xu Jiao. Top image is my top 3 compositions I tidied up. Included some other ideas I’d initially sketched out because everything was in one image and the last two were mandatory image uploads.

obviously i'm taking influence from horror movie posters. Specifical movie posters of the 2000s when everything had to be grindhouse. I'm holding off on doing a 3rd sketch as I really cant decide from my thumbnails.

Description of Work:

I’ve decided to create a movie poster for my project. My zine felt more like a coming of age story so that’s the kinda premise I felt best suited the work. My goal is to work with a limited colour palette of greens and a few yellows. My drafts a very blocky and I’ve included my three favourite thumbnails as cleaner sketches. When laying everything out I focused more on the position of the text as I felt that it was important that I leave room for the title of the film on the film poster.

The first sketch uses the negative space of a willow tree to frame the composition and leave room for the text. The scene within would be very textured and scenic, whilst the two characters sadly look towards each other.

The second sketch is one girls hair hanging down behind them as they lay down and that hair slowly transitioning to willow branches and leaves. This piece would be filled with lots of grass and nature textures to help emphasize the change from person to nature.

The third sketch is the two characters having their existence overtaken by nature. I would also include small items in the story being absorbed into the hedges in the final version, things like a necklace, toys and what not, to help discuss the changing in time and the loss of their relationship and the people they once were.

Anyway that’s all, please enjoy, Merci.
