Security and thefts

A laptop was recently stolen on campus.  Here is a message from facilities:

  • do not leave personal belongings unattended (even to go to the washroom etc) on campus, be it studios, classrooms, library, cafeteria.
  • areas behind card readers are not secure against theft, people let others in all the time, or thieves can follow in behind someone opening a door
  • do not let people in to areas if you do not know them
  • report any suspicious persons or behavior to Security immediately (604-844-3838), this includes someone in an area you often work in that you don't recognize
  • it takes a community effort to prevent theft, be diligent

In rooms 241, 242, 288F and 288B, we all have key card access.  People will frequently leave their cards at home and ask friends to let them in.  If someone ever asks to be let in, it is your right to say NO.  Yes, even if you know them.  Students in good standing can request a replacement card from AV if they come to campus without their card.  Do not feel under any pressure or obligation to risk your own and your peer's security by letting people into the studios.  Politely ask the person to get a card from AV, or to speak with a Security officer.

Consequently, if YOU have left your card at home, be responsible and go to AV.  Do not expect others around the school to believe that you're an ECUAD student if you don't have your ID.
