This course offers students a structured exploration of different design disciplines, including graphic design, product design, user experience (UX) design, user interface (UI) design, and more. It examines the historical and social context around design and how the profession of the designer has changed over the years. For the main assignment, students will conduct research on real industry design practices and designer roles to gain a more in-depth look into their own areas of interest, and present their findings to the class. Students will introspect their own interests and strengths and investigate how they align with areas of interest in design. The course has an optional assignment where students will extend upon their focused areas of interest and can choose between making a portfolio update, new portfolio draft, or creating an action plan to write out concrete steps to align personal and professional goals towards industry opportunities. By the end of the course, students will have a more wellrounded understanding of design professions, different practices and approaches, and how personal interests and strengths can guide their pursuits in the field.
