Introducing art and visual analysis, this course develops the tools necessary to conduct visual and textual literacy. Exposed to global perspectives across various historical periods, class material helps students reflect and engage upon what it means to look, read, think, and write descriptively and critically about art, media, design, and text. Students will be exposed to a Humanities curriculum that is broadly conceived and that foregrounds the arts (drawing from Art History, Visual Culture, Literature, and Cultural and Media Studies). Emphasis will be placed on processes of perception and the cultural significance of images and objects. By honing critical thinking, writing skills, class participation, and overall engagement, students will learn how to interrogate the politics of representation, both its production and reception. This conceptual and practical foundation prepares students for all future concentrations at the University, especially further courses in Critical + Cultural Studies.
The format of the course is linked, with weekly lectures in addition to smaller seminar sessions.
