CECD-102-F001-2021: Colour Theory for Designers

CECD 102  Colour Theory for Design

During this course students will explore the aesthetic, psychological, and technical aspects of colour. As a key design element in effective design, colour can attract and engage an audience, trigger information and association relating to a brand, and determine the order in which information is read and absorbed.

A few exercises provide students with a foundation for completing the projects. Students will:
• create a traditional colour wheel and its accompanying colour schemes
• create colour groupings to interpret mood and meaning

• analyze existing corporate colour schemes for their effectiveness and unique qualities.
Three projects aid students in their practice of design and composition: a book cover using colour as the key design element to support a concept; a re-brand project with a corporate palette effectively conveying the brand persona; and a public service campaign poster using colour to set the mood and establish hierarchy.
