CECD-201-F001-2021: Visualizing Information

Information visualization is the process of representing data in a visual way so that a user/viewer/consumer can better understand it. Common examples can be found all around us at all times. They might include: dashboards, infographics, scatter plots, health reporting data, line graphs, maps, and 3-D virtual building mock-ups. They all depict an overview of information showing relevant connections that allow the user to draw insights and conclusions in an efficient manner.

This course will introduce the designer to different tools used to depict and visualize data, how to create visual hierarchy with information, and where to look for valid sources that form the basis of our explorations. We will use Adobe programs (Illustrator & Indesign) to create vector-based information visualizations, and there will also be an opportunity for the students to infuse their own artistic methods into the projects as we progress through the course.

Two of the three projects are instructor-led, and the third project is based on a concept researched and proposed to the instructor by the student.
