In this introductory course students will learn about the colour theories and techniques employed by artists throughout history, and within diverse contemporary art and design practices. Students will use varied mediums such as acrylic paint, collage, and mixed media to learn the principles of colour theory. We begin the course by making our own traditional colour wheel. Students learn how to use it to create specific hues, tones, and tints as well as how it can be employed to create dynamic visual compositions. From there we examine more complex ideas presented in the work of colorist Josef Albers such as, colour relativity, symbolism, and interaction. Through a hands-on approach students will learn how to communicate emotions and ideas using colour theory.
