Capturing a compelling portrait is an essential skill for any photographer. This practical and theoretical introductory course explores the history and evolution of photographic portraiture and techniques used for producing a compelling, contemporary portrait, including location, lighting, composition, emotion and technical settings. This course will include the use of natural and studio lighting to convey personality and emotion, with the opportunity to photograph your own subjects. This course is suitable for beginner and practicing photographers using both analog and digital cameras. This course does not include darkroom access.

Class time will be focused on one of three activities: lectures and discussions on approaches to portraiture in documentary and visual art and the accompanying ethical issues of these practices, focused studio time and in-class assignments to explore and experiment with photographic techniques and equipment, and critiques of the assignments.
