Social Practice + Community Engagement

This course presents content that address a specific subject area or theme within Social Practice and Community Engagement. Assigned projects specific to the area of study, presentations, demonstrations, and critiques are an integral part of the course. Emphasis is placed on interdisciplinarity, critical examination of the students' work, technical development and the students' exploration of contemporary ideas. 

Topic: Embodied Studio
Consider contemporary art making and thought through the lens of the body, as a site for poetic or political transformation and expression. As a group we will conduct experimental research inquiries into the areas of embodiment, somatics, histories of ritual, pleasure activism, site-specificity and unlearning the dogmas of white supremacy.

In this class, students will have the opportunity to realize self-directed projects with the support of faculty and peers. Classes will be a mix of in person and online; guided workshops and time for students to develop and share their work in progress. I teach from my own practice combining sculpture, drawing, installation, performance, writing and social practice.

This CCID course counts towards the SPACE minor and is open and relevant to all majors: film/video, media, design, studio arts, illustration, photography, critical studies. Social Practice and Community Engagement (SPACE) focuses on nuance, experimentation and making things happen. It looks within and beyond the tradition of art as an object and proposes human relations as the material for art making.
