This course looks at design from a preferable futures perspective, to conceptualize design innovations that range from the probable to the preposterous. Through exposure to community-based initiatives and design theory, students will be introduced to foundational knowledge in design futures and community-based design work. Students will be invited to reflect on their own lived experience, how it informs their design practice within this context, and the importance of amplifying diverse voices in the design process and outcomes. Through a series of in-class workshops, students will learn concept ideation, data synthesis, and data mapping techniques and apply this knowledge in the development of individual projects. These projects will involve the sorting and strategic visual mapping of information, and the conceptualization of a design innovation for a community-specific opportunity space.
