Design as a Critical Medium | Making Public(s)

This 5 day intensive workshop serves as a research and design laboratory for students from across Emily Carr to work on a single theme. The workshop explores design as a medium through which we can instigate critical discussion and debate while encouraging more active forms of intervention and agency.

Theme: there is a common misconception that our public space is universal and inclusive to all, rarely do we stop and consider - whose public? What alternative or narratives or histories are being neglected and what of non-human entities? Focusing on the here and now, this studio will draw from the field of creative ethnography and apply tactics such as tracing, defamiliarizing, narrative environments, and pseudo institutions as ways to explore alternative notions of publicness. The process of design and art making is used as a vehicle to generate dialogues, and through their becoming encourage us to see our current condition as simply one possibility among many. If not within our varied publics, where do we search for differences and imagine alternatives to our current present?
