This 2023 iteration of the course invites students to develop their studio work by integrating research and making in relation to contemporary art practice. The course focuses on media practices, sound art or music, or visual art practice that may combine media or sound forms. Students will identify an area of practice and a project they'd like to undertake for the course, and they will be supported to conduct research and make work fed by their interests in contemporary life and art, and how their interests are situated within contemporary discourse and professional realms. Students will be encouraged to explore questions that lead to a body of experiments and a final project. Alongside the conceptual and iterative material exploration, students will present their process to their peers, and produce a written artist statement, manifesto or interview. Classes consist of readings, seminars, workshops, guest artists, sharing sessions, field trips to events and/or exhibitions. The course includes guest artists who will speak about their work in the fields of sound art, new media, and land-based art, and how their practice is informed by research and conversely how their research is informed by material practice. The guest artists will hold in-class workshopping sessions for students.
